Gorinchem 1566 - Utrecht 1651

The Dutch painter Abraham Bloemaert was born on December 25, 1564 in Gorinchem. He was the son of the architect Cornelius Bloemaert and learned his craft in Utrecht under Frans Floris and Joos de Beer. Later he also studied in Paris for three years. He was mainly influenced by the Romanists and at a later stage also by the Caravaggists.
In 1597 Abraham Bloemaert became a citizen of the city of Amsterdam, but went on to Utrecht in 1611, where he is said to have been one of the founders of the Utrecht school of painting.
Bloemaert influenced Dutch painting with his work - he is also known as a mediator between the Flemish and the Dutch schools. At the same time he cultivated portrait, history and genre painting. Abraham Bloemaert died in Utrecht on January 27, 1651.
